Speed is three numbers, not one.
Download
How fast data reaches you, in megabits per second. It drives streaming, page loads, and pulling files down. A 4K stream wants about 25 Mbps; a ten-person office working in cloud apps is usually comfortable from about 100 Mbps.
Upload
How fast data leaves you. Video calls, cloud backups, and sending large files all live on upload — and it's the number most plans quietly skimp on. An HD call wants 3 to 5 Mbps; office backups appreciate 20 Mbps or more.
Latency under load
How slow your connection gets while it's busy. If latency jumps from 30 ms idle to several hundred during a transfer, calls will stutter every time someone moves a big file. A fast plan can still fail this test.

How much internet speed do I actually need?
As a rule of thumb, one HD video call needs about 3 to 5 Mbps in each direction, a 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps down, and an office of ten people working in cloud apps is usually comfortable starting around 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. Upload and latency matter as much as the download number for calls and cloud work.
Why is my speed lower than what I pay for?
Plans are sold as up-to speeds measured on a wired connection at the modem. Wi-Fi distance and interference, old cabling or network equipment, a busy VPN or firewall, other devices on the network, and provider congestion at peak hours all cut into what a single device actually gets.
What is latency under load, or bufferbloat?
Latency under load is how slow your connection gets while it is busy. On many networks, one large download or backup makes response times jump from tens of milliseconds to hundreds or more, which is why calls stutter while files transfer. A connection can score fast on raw speed and still fail this test.
How accurate is a browser-based speed test?
This test moves real data over HTTPS between your browser and our edge network using several parallel streams, the same path your cloud apps use. It is a solid snapshot for one device at one moment, but it cannot see other devices on your network or say where a slowdown lives. That takes managed network monitoring.
