Reading the Numbers

Three numbers decide how your connection feels.

Packet loss

The share of probes that never came back. Aim for 0%. Around 1% sustained loss, phone and video calls start to break up; above 2.5%, most real-time apps become frustrating to use.

Latency

How long a round trip takes, in milliseconds. Under about 100 ms feels instant. Between 100 and 250 ms, calls develop a talk-over-each-other delay. Beyond that, everything feels sluggish.

Jitter

How much the latency swings from probe to probe. Steady beats fast: jitter under 30 ms keeps voice smooth, while big swings cause the robotic, garbled audio people blame on "bad internet."

What is packet loss?

Packet loss happens when pieces of data traveling between your device and a server never arrive. The network re-sends them, but real-time traffic like phone and video calls cannot wait, so you hear robotic audio, see frozen video, or drop the call entirely.

What level of packet loss is acceptable?

Zero is the goal on a healthy wired connection. As a rule of thumb, real-time apps like VoIP and video conferencing start to degrade noticeably around 1% sustained loss, and above 2.5% most calls become frustrating. Brief spikes matter less than sustained loss.

What causes packet loss?

The most common culprits are Wi-Fi interference or weak signal, an overloaded internet uplink, failing cables or network hardware, and problems inside your internet provider's network. Overloaded firewalls and VPNs can add to it.

How accurate is a browser-based packet loss test?

This test measures your connection the way your cloud apps actually use it: over HTTPS from your browser to our edge network. Lost packets surface as failed or sharply delayed probes. It is a reliable screening tool, but it cannot see inside your firewall or pinpoint which network hop is failing. That takes managed network monitoring.
